Exit & Emergency Lights
Exit lighting is used to direct people out of a building in an emergency. Emergency lighting is used to provide lighting for people exiting a building and for the Fire Service to search the building if they attend the site.
Exit lighting is required in all commercial buildings. Emergency lighting is required in any building over 300 square metres.
Once installed, Exit and Emergency Lighting should be regularly maintained. The minimum maintenance requirements as documented in South Australian legislation and regulations are:
- monthly check that the lights operate
- 6 monthly test to ensure that the lights remain operating for 90 minutes on battery power
The maintenance of exit and emergency lighting can only be undertaken by a competent person. All of the service technicians at Fire & Emergency Services SA are trained in the servicing exit and emergency lighting and are independently accredited. It is recommended that only companies, such as Fire & Emergency Services SA, that are recognised businesses under the Fire Protection Accreditation Scheme (FPAS) be used to maintain your exit and emergency lighting.
