Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are first attack fire equipment aimed at extinguishing small fires or containing a fire while an area is evacuated.
All buildings and work places (including vehicles) are required to have fire extinguishers, refer to the Building Code of Australia and Work Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
There is no single type of fire extinguisher suitable for all types of fires. Fire & Emergency Services SA can undertake a FREE review of your site and advise you of the type and location where fire extinguishers should be installed.
Once installed fire extinguishers should be regularly maintained. The minimum maintenance requirements as documented in South Australian legislation and regulations are:
- 6 monthly inspection
- 6 yearly discharge, cylinder test and recharge
The maintenance of fire extinguishers can only be undertaken by a competent person. All of the service technicians at Fire & Emergency Services SA are trained in the servicing of fire extinguishers and are independently accredited. It is recommended that only companies, such as Fire & Emergency Services SA, that are recognised businesses under the Fire Protection Accreditation Scheme (FPAS) be used to maintain your fire equipment.
All staff should be trained in the operation of fire extinguishers. Fire & Emergency Services SA can provide a short (1.5 hour) course that will ensure all your staff know what fire extinguisher to use and how to use it in an emergency.
